Rediscovering Your Unique Style As A Newly Out Gay Man

Coming out? That’s a big deal.

It’s liberating. Terrifying. Like opening a door you didn’t even know existed and stepping into a world that’s been waiting for you. And now that you’re here, everything feels different—including the way you see yourself in the mirror.

Maybe for years, you dressed to blend in. Safe, neutral, forgettable. Clothes that made you feel invisible, or worse, like you were wearing someone else’s life. But now? It’s time to rediscover what style really means to you. Time to break some old rules, toss out the things that don’t serve you, and step fully into yourself.

I remember coming out at 18 and my very first purchase were these underwear from Ginch Gonch, that had cute patterns and were very skimpy. Honestly, it was a defining moment for me, because it was the start of me adopting my own style and fully coming to terms with the fact that I had just come out.

Question Everything You Thought You Knew About Style

There’s a voice in your head, isn’t there? The one that says, Guys don’t wear that. The one that tells you to tone it down. Dress appropriately. It’s time to stop listening.

Style isn’t about playing it safe. It’s not about what’s "acceptable." It’s about finding the pieces that make you feel like you—not some half-version of yourself that keeps other people comfortable. Forget what’s "masculine" or "feminine." What looks good and what doesn’t. The only real question? Does it feel right when you put it on?

Find Your Style Icons (They Might Not Be Who You Expect)

Inspiration is everywhere. And no, it doesn’t have to come from celebrities or runway models. Maybe it’s the old guy at your coffee shop who layers vintage blazers like a pro. Maybe it’s your artsy friend who thrifted a killer leather jacket for $20. Maybe it’s someone on the street who walked past you once, their entire presence making you think, Damn, I want to dress like that.

Start collecting ideas. Save photos. Screenshot outfits that make you stop scrolling. Soon, you’ll notice a pattern—certain colors, textures, fits that pull you in. That’s your gut talking. Listen to it.

I've always been inspired by the vintage clothes some of my university peers were wearing, and it wasn't until I came out that I actually started wearing them myself.

Experiment Like You’re In A Dressing Room Of Possibilities

Shopping? It’s not just about buying. It’s about trying. Seeing what fits, what moves with you, what makes you feel like you own the sidewalk.

Take risks. Wear something you’d never normally try. Maybe a structured coat that makes you feel powerful. Maybe a sheer shirt that lets you breathe. Maybe layering a men’s wool gilet over a simple tee, just to see if it gives you that perfect blend of sharp and effortless. Clothes are just clothes until you put them on—then, they become a part of you.

For a lot of gays, a speedo was out of the question before coming out. And now it is a staple!

Build A Wardrobe That Matches Your Energy

Every piece in your wardrobe should add to the overall vibe you’re going for. Some things are staples—perfectly worn-in jeans, the kind of jacket that pulls every outfit together, boots that make you feel invincible. But the fun? That’s in the statement pieces. The ones that take an outfit from "nice" to this is who I am.

And no, you don’t have to do it all at once. Your style will grow as you do. Add to it piece by piece, and before you know it, you’ll have a wardrobe that tells your story without you having to say a word.

We've definitely been pursuing the casual look lately as we are very relaxed individuals.

Don’t Be Afraid To Evolve

You’re not locked into one aesthetic. There’s no rule saying you have to pick a "look" and stick with it forever. Some days you might feel like keeping it minimal. Other days, you’ll want to go all out with bold prints and stacked accessories. That’s the beauty of style—it grows with you.

So try new things. Change your mind. Let yourself be surprised by what you end up loving. Fashion isn’t about getting it right. It’s about feeling right in your own skin.

And when you do? That’s when you’ll know. You’re not just dressing—you’re showing up as YOU.

Our fashion these days consist of a lot of tank tops and basics, particularly since we travel to warm places a lot, but that is evolving all the time, especially when we are back in our base.
