Known for its historical position on the Silk Road, Sheki offered us a chance to dive deep into its rich culture, from wandering through an ancient caravanserai to experiencing traditional chai rituals. We even made time to check out a unique bio park.

So, we did something we were curious about and headed to Naftalan, Azerbaijan to get a CRUDE OIL BATH. The whole town and resorts are built around this bizarre concept.

The resort had… let's say… an unusual charm. Imagine stepping into a place that feels like a cross between a sanatorium and an elderly home, where the smell of hospital disinfectant mixes with cafeteria food. As the youngest guests by a solid 40 years, we couldn't help but wonder-what are we doing here?

Our first attempt at the infamous Naftalan oil bath didn't go as planned. Nervous, intrigued, and slightly confused, we found ourselves not in the black oil bath, but on massage tables due to a mix-up in appointments. But the strangeness didn't end there. Wandering through the quiet streets of Naftalan, it became clear-this town's obsession with oil is more than skin deep.

Finally, after soaking in the town's odd energy (and history), we returned for the experience we came for: the legendary oil bath. Was it everything we expected? Well… you'll have to see for yourself.

We Took A Bath In Crude Oil 🇦🇿

When we were looking at outdated forums of train travel in Azerbaijan, there was always a lot of dissing of Azerbaijani trains, but these new trains launched in June 2024 exceeded our expectations.

Fast, kind service, clean bathrooms, on time — were just some of the positives. 

Azerbaijan is set to expand these routes across the country, replacing old, rickety Soviet-era trains. 

It might not be as fast at what is in European countries or China and Japan, but it is vastly better than what is in the US 😜.
