While visiting Sheki, we couldn’t miss the chance to explore the charming village of Kish (not to be confused with the Iranian island). This must-see destination in the region is nestled in the lush hills of northern Azerbaijan, just beyond the start of the northern Caucasus Mountains, with the Republic of Dagestan on the other side. Kish offers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and cultural significance.
Though nearby villages like Qakh and Ilisu promise a similar experience, Sheki and Kish easily outshine them. As for Zaqatala, we’d suggest skipping it—after passing through in a marshrutka on our way to the Lagodekhi border, it felt utterly devoid of charm.
Kish looks especially picturesque under a blanket of snow, but that’s not my preference. Snow, for me, is only enjoyable when skiing; otherwise, it’s just too cold. If you’re ready to explore Kish, here’s everything you need to know.
In this post, we’ll cover our visit to Kish and share all the tips you need to plan your trip. But first, here’s a vlog we filmed during our visit:

What’s the best place to stay in Kish?
When visiting Kish, your best bet for accommodation is staying in Sheki. The town offers a range of lodging options, and staying there allows you to explore both the historic Sheki Khan’s Palace and the beauty of Kish village while enjoying top-tier amenities.
Kish itself is small and doesn’t have the same level of accommodation options, so basing yourself in Sheki is the smart choice—especially since one day is enough to explore Kish.
A fantastic option in Sheki is the Sheki Palace Hotel, a 4-star establishment that beautifully combines comfort with a touch of historical charm. While many visitors to Sheki choose to stay at the famous Caravanserai (Karvansaray Hotel), it’s worth noting that this iconic Silk Road resting place, which still operates as a hotel for modern travelers, cannot be booked online. If you’re keen to experience it, you’ll need to either take a chance upon arrival or call ahead to reserve a room directly with the reception.
For our visit, we opted to stay outside the old town, largely because we worried that it might feel too touristy. Although Sheki’s old town wasn’t crowded at all when we were there, we still appreciated experiencing a more authentic and lively vibe in Sheki’s main town.
Sheki Palace Hotel: This hotel offers a taste of royal luxury, as it’s located just steps away from the Sheki Khan’s Palace. The rooms are elegantly designed in a classic style, and the property features an indoor pool for added relaxation.
Marxal Resort & Spa: If you’re in the mood for indulgence, Marxal Resort & Spa is an excellent choice. With facilities like saunas, steam rooms, and even an on-site cinema, this resort is perfect for a splurge. It’s located closer to Kish Village than Sheki itself but is only a short taxi ride from the town center.
But I wish I had stayed in the Caravanserai instead.
Which airports in Azerbaijan are best for visiting Sheki and Kish?
The closest airport to Sheki and Kish is Gabala International Airport, located about an hour’s drive away. However, Baku’s Heydar Aliyev International Airport is the main gateway to Azerbaijan, providing many more flights. From Baku, you can either take a domestic flight to Gabala or opt for a scenic 4-5 hour drive through the Azerbaijani countryside in a questionable marshrutka.
If you’re planning a multi-country adventure, this route pairs well with Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan tours, especially if you’re coming from Tbilisi or Yerevan. However, due to ongoing conflicts, you’ll need to pass through Georgia when traveling between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Don't miss the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku on your way to Sheki and Kish!
How do you get to Kish?
We landed in Baku and decided to explore Azerbaijan before heading to Georgia and Armenia.
After spending a few days in Baku and joining some tours, we took a train to Naftalan and then a taxi to Sheki for around $40. It’s quite a journey—almost two hours.
Once in Sheki, we took marshrutka Number 15 from the Teze Bazar to Kish. Alternatively, you can take a taxi, Yandex, or Bolt. Transportation is very affordable in Azerbaijan, thanks to Azerbaijan being an oil state and the low cost of gas. It took us no more than 5 Manat to get back from Kish to Sheki when hailing a cab.
The very local Teze Bazar, your gateway to Kish!
The only ones in Marshrutka Number 15...for now.
What’s the history of Kish?
Kish’s history spans thousands of years and is deeply rooted in the legacy of Caucasian Albania. Once a pivotal settlement in the region, Kish transitioned from a pagan spiritual hub to an essential Christian site, highlighted by its iconic Kish Church. Today, Kish is a peaceful village that preserves its rich heritage while welcoming visitors eager to explore its historical and cultural significance.
Why Is It Called Caucasian Albania? It has nothing to do with the country Albania. Caucasian Albania refers to an ancient region that included parts of modern-day Azerbaijan, such as Kish. The term was coined by the Romans, much like how Georgia was called Iberia. This area was home to diverse tribes and cultures, with Kish emerging as a vital part of its rich history.

The History of The Church of Kish aka "The Albanian Temple"
The Church of Kish, also called the Temple of Kish, is one of the most ancient Christian sites in the Caucasus. Tradition holds that it was built in the 1st century A.D. by St. Eliseus, a disciple of Thaddeus of Edessa, making it the first church in Caucasian Albania. Archaeological excavations reveal that this site has even older roots, with evidence of activity dating back to the Bronze Age (3rd–2nd millennium BCE). Sacred burials and relics suggest the area held spiritual importance long before the advent of Christianity, likely connected to Zoroastrianism and local polytheistic traditions.
When Christianity spread to the region in the 4th century, the site was repurposed into a church, marking a profound shift from pagan to Christian worship.
Today, the Kish Church operates as a museum, showcasing its layered history through artifacts and exhibits. For those willing to explore further, nearby fortresses and hiking trails offer a chance to experience both the ancient and modern charm of this remarkable region.
