Sighnaghi (Signagi), often dubbed the "City of Love", is nestled in the heart of the Kakheti region of Georgia (alongside bigger cities like Telavi and nature spots like Tusheti National Park). Known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich winemaking tradition, Sighnaghi offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. This charming town is a haven for those seeking a deeper understanding of Georgian heritage and hospitality. Let me share with you our journey through Sighnaghi, filled with wine tasting, exploring cobblestone paths, and more.
To be honest, I was a bit apprehensive to come to Sighnaghi, as I had heard it was very much geared towards tourists. While that is quite accurate, places deemed touristy are often like that for a reason - and Sighnaghi is just plain enchanting. Arriving to the town from Tbilisi around twilight, we were greeted with a gorgeous sunset and snow capped peaks in the distance, and I immediately had no regrets about deciding to visit.
The best thing is that most of the other visitors are in town on day trips, so the evenings are far more peaceful.
Here's a list of activities that will ensure you experience the best of what Sighnaghi has to offer.
1. Savor the Essence of Georgian Wine
Wine tasting tops the list for a reason. Known for its ancient winemaking traditions, Sighnaghi is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the local wine culture.
Wine House Khalani, located right on the main street, offers an intimate tasting experience. You'll feel the passion in each sip as their guide takes you through their selection of wines and even lets you try the local chacha, a strong Georgian spirit. You’ll leave feeling exceedingly tipsy, informed, and happy - ready to conquer another item off this list!
Another gem is the Guest House Vista, where you can witness Roman, the owner, craft wine on-site. It's a personal touch you won't forget, making your stay both enlightening and delicious. We also stayed here during our time in Sighnaghi, and it was cozy, inexpensive, and had a fantastic breakfast.
If you are stretched for time and can only manage a day trip from Tbilisi, this private wine tasting tour in Sighnaghi has you covered.
2. Wander Through Sighnaghi’s Old Town
The first thing you'll want to do upon arrival (maybe even before the wine tasting) is explore the town itself. Sighnaghi’s charm points to another era, with its cobblestone streets, Sighnaghi Fortress, and historic architecture. While wandering, you'll encounter delightful cafés, vibrant markets, and remnants of old fortresses that whisper stories of the past.
We found that early mornings or twilight are perfect times to meander, with soft light offering picturesque views that capture Sighnaghi's essence.
3. Hike to St. George’s Church and Alazani Valley Viewpoint
Hint, you can unlock the little door from the bottom in case it is closed!
For those with a thirst for a bit of adventure, a hike to the northern edge of town leads you to St. George’s Church. This walk offers not only the opportunity to connect with nature but also a chance to see the simplicity and beauty of the small church and its surrounding cemetery. The paths narrow as you progress, promising a tranquil journey.
If you want a stunning viewpoint of the surrounding valleys, head back almost into town and then walk along the main road until you reach the Alazani Valley Viewpoint, where you will be treated to views up until the mountains of the surrounding Kakheti region.
4. Tread to Bodbe Monastery and Onward to Holy Spring
Just two kilometers from Sighnaghi to the South, Bodbe Monastery is a site of spiritual significance and architectural beauty first built in the 9th century. The journey itself is serene, and the monastery stands as a testament to Georgia's enduring faith and artistry. While it has been restored quite a few times, and appears quite new, it is one of the more beautiful monasteries we have encountered in all of Georgia.
Continuing beyond familiar roads, you can hike down through the tranquil woods to the Holy Spring, where an ancient holy water on tap awaits. We admit that the hike is quite a steep one, but you are treated to some miraculously tasty water when you arrive.
This tour hits up both Bodbe Monastery and includes wine tasting - a great one if you are strained for time and don't have time for an overnight trip to Sighnaghi.
5. Eat Your Way Through the Local Culinary Scene
Sighnaghi’s restaurant scene is a culinary delight, inviting you to taste traditional Georgian dishes like khachapuri and khinkali, and pair those with wine, of course! Each bite tells a story, reflecting the region's rich agricultural resources and age-old recipes.
We chose well when we were in Sighnaghi and were never disappointed. Our favorites were:
- Okro's Wines: A restaurant with a focus on wine, Okro's dishes are fantastic. We went with a bottle of red, alongside a cheese plate exploding with many cheeses, and one of the best Ojakhuris we've had in Georgia. The staff is kind, and you have terrace views of the surrounding area.
- Terrace Kisi: We came here after an aforementioned wine tasting, so we were ravenous at this point. Terrace Kisi offers (you guessed it), yet another beautiful viewpoint of the valley and their Adjaruli Khachapuri and barbecue satiated our drunken munchies.
What is khachapuri? Watch this video:
6. Pop By ChikChiki Cafe for a Coffee (or a Party)
This time...we stopped by for a glühwein and party!
If you are in desperate need to satisfy your coffee fix and the instant stuff just isn't doing it for you, head to ChikChiki for a brew!
Located right in the heart of the city, between two streets, ChikChiki is not just a café. As the evening rolls on, you'll likely be catching them putting on a bonfire during the colder months and playing some music. We came on an evening when the owners were DJing and playing piano, and it was the ideal nightcap.
Think Tbilisi hipster vibes, but in little Sighnaghi. They are also opening a restaurant next door in the remains of an old carpet factory, so make sure to check it out when you are in town.
7. Capture Moments Within a Love Heart
Sighnaghi is sprinkled with symbols of love, and the love heart photo backdrops in town against drop-dead gorgeous views is a perfect spot for a memorable photograph. It's not just about the photo but the connection you feel in a place so devoted to love and unity.
Just wandering around the town, you are sure to find quite a few of these. Some will charge you 5 GEL to take a photo, but others are in cafés, so just grab a drink, and you are good to go.
8. Explore the Georgian National Museum
How do you interpret this? One of Niki Pirosmani's pieces at the Georgian National Museum
A visit to a local museum provides insights into the region’s history and culture.
The Georgia National Museum (or the Museum of History and Ethnography) houses a remarkable collection of artifacts that resonate with the stories and achievements of Georgia's past. The biggest draw is Niko Pirosmani's sometimes bizarre, but entrancing paintings. It is definitely worth an hour of your time.
9. Experience Georgia and Sighnaghi’s Festivals
Autumn is the perfect time for harvest and wine festivals
Time your visit with one of Sighnaghi's local festivals to witness Georgian traditions and celebrations in full swing. These festivals offer a lens into the community's vibrant culture and deep-rooted heritage. From theater to art and of course, to wine, there is a festival for all!

10. Take Home a Souvenir
Can you spot the Georgian wannabe?!
Whether you love souvenirs or not, use this as a time to get somebody that you love and care about a souvenir from the City of Love! You could simply send a postcard, pick up a bottle of your favorite wine from the tasting, or even go for one of those traditional Georgian sheepskin Papakh hats.
Conclusion
Sighnaghi is more than just a destination; it's an experience wrapped in warm hospitality and remarkable beauty. Each turn in this quaint town offers a gentle reminder of life’s richness and the stories we carry. Whether you're wandering the cobblestones or toasting with a glass of locally crafted wine, Sighnaghi invites you to discover and celebrate the many loves that inhabit its streets.
