Intro to Gay Hat Yai
Hat Yai might not be the first place you think of for LGBTQ+ travel in Thailand (looking over at you Bangkok), but this southern city is actually quite vibrant and has plenty to offer.
We first heard about it from a Grab driver in Penang, Malaysia, who told us he visits every month because it’s “way more fun than Penang and beer is cheaper.” The fun and the beer got our attention, and we ended up there and the nearby town of Songkhla for nearly 3 weeks.
Located in Songkhla Province, Hat Yai is Thailand’s fourth-largest city and a major trading hub connecting Thailand with Malaysia. While it doesn’t have the gay nightlife of Bangkok or the beaches of Phuket, it’s a fascinating mix of Thai, Chinese, and Malay influences, known for its food, markets, and easygoing vibe. Plus, it’s a convenient gateway to Southern Thailand’s islands, including Koh Lipe and Koh Tarutao.
For LGBTQ+ travelers, Hat Yai is safe and welcoming, though the scene is more low-key. You won’t find a huge gay district, but there are gay-friendly hotels, bars, and even a sauna if you know where to look. Whether you’re stopping by on your way to the islands or curious about this underrated city, here’s your ultimate gay guide to Hat Yai.
We mention Songkhla and Songkhla Old Town quite a lot in this post. This is a beachside town about 40 minutes by car from Hat Yai. If you head to Hat Yai and want to escape the bustling city vibes, this is the ideal sweet spot.

FAQs About Gay Hat Yai
Is Hat Yai LGBTQ+ Friendly?
Thailand is generally LGBTQ+ friendly, especially since same-sex marriage was put into place in 2025, and Hat Yai is no exception. Though more conservative than places like Bangkok or Pattaya, queer travelers won’t have issues here. Locals are polite, and same-sex couples are unlikely to face discrimination, though public displays of affection (for all couples) are rare compared to more liberal places in Thailand.
While there’s no official gay nightlife, Hat Yai does have a gay sauna, some LGBTQ+ friendly bars, and a welcoming atmosphere. Many Malaysians and Singaporeans visit for the weekend, adding to the city’s international feel.
While Hat Yai doesn’t explicitly have a gay scene, there are a few places to check out, and most bars, cafés, and hotels are LGBTQ+ inclusive.

How to Meet Gay Locals in Hat Yai?
Since Hat Yai doesn’t have many dedicated gay spaces, apps like Grindr, Jack'd, Blued, and Tinder are going to be your best friend to connect with local LGBTQ+ people. Many Malaysians visit Hat Yai for the weekend for a more liberal atmosphere, so you’ll find a mix of travelers and locals online.
For a more social experience, Central Festival Mall and the Greenway Night Market are great places to hang out and meet people in a relaxed environment.

Should You Visit Hat Yai or Songkhla?
If you’re debating between Hat Yai or Songkhla, the best answer is — why not both?
Hat Yai is the larger city and the more convenient base, offering lively markets, shopping malls, and a handful of gay-friendly spots like Elysium Sauna. It’s a great spot for budget travelers and those looking for a taste of local Thai city life with a small sprinkle of LGBTQ+ friendliness.
Songkhla, about 40 minutes away by car or minibus, is more scenic and relaxed, with its charming Old Town, lakeside views, and Samila Beach. While the gay scene is more understated, the slower pace and photogenic streets make it perfect for couples or solo travelers looking for something off the beaten path.
For the best experience, spend a couple of nights in Hat Yai to explore the city’s nightlife and markets, then head to Songkhla for a day trip or an overnight stay by the beach.

The Best Gay-Friendly Hotels in Hat Yai
While there aren't necessarily any Travel Proud accommodations in Hat Yai yet, there are a few places that we stopped by that were quite professional and kind.
Monkham Village Hat Yai
Monkham Village Hat Yai is a chic 4-star accommodation situated 1.2 km from the heart of Hat Yai, featuring contemporary design, roomy lodgings, and outstanding service. It’s an excellent pick for LGBTQ+ travelers seeking comfort and tranquility, while remaining conveniently close to the city’s highlights.

Hat Yai Signature Hotel is a sleek option if you are staying nearby the airport (which is common if you are just transiting through Hat Yai). Facilities include a gym and swimming pool.
Laguna Grand Hotel & Spa Songkhla
Additionally, if you are heading to the nearby beach town of Songkhla (more on that later), we considered Laguna Grand Hotel & Spa Songkhla: a stunning option that appeared lavish and inviting—but it was outside our budget for this trip. Only our friend opted to stay there.

Gay Hat Yai Nightlife & Saunas
Hat Yai doesn’t have a big LGBTQ+ nightlife scene, but here’s where to go:
Elysium Sauna: The Must-Visit Gay Spot
In Hat Yai, you’ll find Elysium, the largest gay sauna in Southern Thailand, renowned for its excellent reviews and vibrant atmosphere. This unique venue is the perfect place to connect with other gay travelers and locals in a more intimate setting. As Hat Yai’s only recognized gay sauna, Elysium attracts a diverse crowd, featuring both Thai and Malaysian guests, creating a welcoming and friendly environment.
Elysium is open from Friday to Sunday from 6 PM to 11 PM, and on Thursday, but do note that the hours may vary on holidays. The sauna is closed from Monday to Wednesday, so make sure to plan your visit accordingly, especially since it closes early at 11 PM.
Bars and Cafés with Gay-Friendly Vibes
If you’re in the mood for a lively night out, consider visiting Post Laser Disc Pub, located at 84 Prachayindee Rd in Hat Yai. This nightclub is known for its energetic atmosphere, featuring fantastic DJs and dazzling laser lights. While it’s not exclusively a gay venue, it attracts an open-minded crowd, making it a fun place to enjoy the nightlife.
Finally, for a stylish start to your evening, head to West Side Saloon Hat Yai on Suphasan Rangsan Rd. This trendy bar is known for its creative cocktails and laid-back ambiance, making it a popular spot among both locals and tourists alike. With a variety of inviting venues, Hat Yai offers an exciting nightlife experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
Gay Nightlife in Songkhla
Aside from Elysium, Hat Yai and the surrounding area boast several LGBTQ+-friendly spots worth checking out. If you are staying in nearby Songkhla, Grandpa Never Drunk Alone is a relaxed bar located in Songkhla Old Town, offering a chill atmosphere that’s great for enjoying a drink and mingling with others.
Another of our favorite options is Chailay Coffee, a beachside café in Songkhla Old Town, just outside of Hat Yai. It has a friendly vibe and is perfect for unwinding by the sea.

Things to Do in Hat Yai (With a Gay Twist)
Hat Yai boasts a lively blend of lifestyle, cuisine, and attractions. We will have an entirely separate post about other things to do in Hat Yai, but here’s a curated selection of a few must-see spots in and around the city:
Asean Night Bazaar, Greenway Night Market & Central Festival Mall
These bustling markets are a haven for street food, shopping, and souvenirs. At Asean Night Bazaar, don’t miss the food court on the second floor—be sure to sample the world-famous Hat Yai Fried Chicken! Nearby, Central Festival Mall is the largest shopping destination in Southern Thailand, perfect for a contemporary retail experience. The Greenway Night Market is also just a short stroll away.

Khlong Hae Floating Market
The Hat Yai Khlong Hae floating market was definitely a highlight for us while in Hat Yai. Only open Saturday and Sunday evenings, the floating market features a bunch of food and drink vendors both on and off the river. The vibes at sunset are spot on and make sure to have a wander to the nearby replica of the famous Shwedagon Pagoda (which is in Yangon City, Myanmar) for some incredible Burmese temple architecture.

Chinatown
Hat Yai’s Chinatown is a beautiful, lively district with street food, market stalls, temples, and cultural hotspots. The area comes alive during celebrations, offering a fantastic atmosphere and plenty of delicious bites to try.

Final Thoughts: Is Hat Yai Worth Visiting for Gay Travelers?
Hat Yai (and Songkhla) isn’t a gay party destination, but it’s a fantastic place to experience authentic Thai culture in a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere with very few foreign tourists. Whether you’re here for a quick stop or a longer stay, you’ll find friendly locals, amazing food, and unique experiences.
