In a region not typically associated with LGBTQ+ acceptance, Yerevan and Armenia as a whole might unsurprisingly be quite conservative in comparison to European cities like Berlin and London. But that doesn’t mean queer culture is absent or that it isn’t evolving in a positive direction (it is called the "Pink City" for a reason 💅).
Armenia's capital city is emerging as one of the Caucasus region's more welcoming cities for LGBTQ+ travelers due to its safe spaces and inclusive attitudes, especially among its younger generation, offering a unique blend of ancient culture and modern mindsets.
We spent a few weeks in Yerevan, and while we found that many local gay men were in closet and PDA was nonexistent (between straight people as well), we found that there was an emerging underground culture, much like that of Tbilisi's in neighboring Georgia.
While rainbow flags may not flutter openly in the breeze, Yerevan's LGBTQ+ scene thrives through intimate gatherings, progressive venues, and a tight-knit community that balances visibility with discretion. And although the city and country may not top the World's Most LGBTQ+ friendly lists, there are countless other reasons why you should add Yerevan to your bucket list.

Welcome to Gay Yerevan
Alright, so Armenia isn't exactly topping the Equality Index charts at 27 out of 100 (although it is one point higher than neighboring Azerbaijan 🙃).
Despite the grim numbers, walking through Yerevan's bustling streets, you'll find the city remarkably safe, especially compared to other capitals in Western Europe. The younger generation here is increasingly open-minded, and you'll discover pockets of progressive culture thriving alongside ancient traditions.
Trust me, the LGBTQ+ scene here operates with a unique blend of visibility and discretion. Places like Relokant Bar and EJE have become low-key havens for the community, hosting regular queer-friendly events that bring together locals and travelers alike.
While public displays of affection aren't common (regardless of orientation), Yerevan's queer community has built strong networks of support. Keep an eye on social media accounts like @diaries.am for the latest LGBTQ+ events – they're your ticket to connecting with the local scene. Remember, though: discretion is valued here, and respecting local customs goes a long way.

Where can I find LGBTQ+ spaces?
The scene is underground but vibrant! Relokant Bar hosts regular queer parties, and EJE welcomes everyone with open arms. Pro tip: follow local LGBTQ+ organizations like Pink Armenia and Right Side (Right Side focused more on transgender equality) on social media for event updates.

Gay Yerevan Map
While I could list every LGBTQ+ friendly spot in Yerevan, that wouldn't be the most responsible thing to do – some venues prefer to stay under the radar for good reason! What I can tell you is that most queer-friendly spaces cluster around the city center, particularly near the Opera House and Cascade areas.
For the most current spots, your best bet is connecting with local LGBTQ+ organizations like Pink Armenia. They'll point you toward safe spaces that match your vibe. Keep in mind that venues can change quickly, so what's hot one month might be quiet the next.
Pro-tip: many places aren't explicitly LGBTQ+ but are known to be welcoming. Look for spots with young, artistic crowds – they're usually your best bet for finding your tribe in Yerevan.
Here are all the places mentioned in this guide (and more) including our recommendations:
Best Gay-Friendly Hotels in Yerevan
Finding LGBTQ-friendly accommodation in Yerevan is easier than you might think! While hotels here don't explicitly advertise as gay-friendly, many upscale international chains maintain their global inclusive policies. You'll find welcoming staff and zero raised eyebrows at check-in.
For the true Yerevan experience, book the Armenia Marriott Hotel in Yerevan. It is located right in one of the classic, original buildings in Republic Square.
Alternatively, check out the Courtyard by Yerevan Marriott for sleek and sexy rooms that are right in the center of all the action.
For a more authentic experience, consider locally-owned guesthouses. These intimate spaces often offer a more personal touch, and many owners are quietly supportive of the LGBTQ+ community. Plus, you'll get insider tips on the local scene that you won't find in any guidebook!
Pro-tip: Misterbnb has become a game-changer for queer travelers in more conservative cities like Yerevan. Connecting with LGBTQ+ local hosts means instant access to community knowledge and a friendly face in the city. These hosts often know the latest hangout spots and can introduce you to their social circles.
When booking, look for properties near the Opera House or Cascade areas – these neighborhoods tend to be more progressive and put you within walking distance of queer-friendly venues. Remember, discretion is valued here, so don't expect rainbow flags, but do expect genuine Armenian hospitality!
You can't go wrong with hotels by the Cascade, as you will want to climb it more than once for Mt. Ararat views!
Gay Yerevan Nightlife: Tips, Bars, and Clubs
Yerevan's queer nightlife might be low-key, but it's got serious charm! The scene here comes alive after 11 PM, with venues like Relokant Bar leading the charge. They host some of the city's most vibrant queer parties (and some karaoke, of course) – just don't expect the same kind of open advertising you might see in Western cities. Keep an eye on events via their Instagram:
EJE is another favorite spot where you'll find a mixed crowd of locals and travelers vibing together. While not exclusively LGBTQ+, it's known for its welcoming atmosphere and occasional queer events. Pro-tip: weekends are busiest, but mid-week gatherings often feel more intimate and local.
We also loved hanging out at the cafés in Art Kvartal and the ruin bars, such as 13:20.am, which were more hipster than anything, but definitely had some queer people hanging out around them.
If you are a beer fan, make sure to try the famed Yerevan-brewed Dargett Beer. Alternatively, if you are wine fan, Armenia is well-known for its ancient practice of wine-making, so head to a wine bar.
Pro Tips for Night Owls
- PDA - When it comes to PDA, take your cues from the locals. Yerevan's nightlife scene is all about subtle signals and knowing glances – save the passionate displays for private spaces. Even straight couples are quite reserved here, so do your best not to trigger a revolution 🤣.
- Venues - Stick to venues recommended by local LGBTQ+ organizations or trusted social media accounts like @diaries.am.
- Bring cash - not all venues take cards, although most will
- Safety - Use ride-sharing apps (Yandex and GG) for late-night transport, and keep your celebrations within LGBTQ-friendly spaces.
The community here has mastered the art of having fun while staying street-smart, and you should too! Trust me, once you're in the know, Yerevan's nightlife will show you a whole new side of the city.

Our Other Yerevan Recommendations
Beyond the nightlife and queer culture, Yerevan's got plenty to keep you entertained!
We made an entire post about 25 Things to Do in Yerevan (including various restaurants and foods to try out), so open these up in a new tab and find what tickles your fancy.
In the meantime, we'll give you a little taste of what you can do here:
Start your day with a workout at the iconic Cascade steps (one of our favorite tourist spots in the world) – trust us, those 572 steps will wake you up better than any Armenian-style coffee. While you're there, snap those Instagram-worthy shots of the city skyline with Mount Ararat in the background.
The incredible Cascade Complex
History buffs (and all visitors for that matter) should spend an obligatory few hours at Armenia's Genocide Museum. For food lovers, head to Saryan Street, where wine bars and trendy restaurants line the sidewalks. Try traditional dolma (and lamajo) at Tavern Yerevan – the grape leaves are stuffed with the most incredible spiced rice. For booze lovers, head to the Ararat Brandy Company for a quirky brandy tour complete with brandy tasting.
Yerevan also has an F-ton of fountains!
For the perfect (half) day trip, hop over to the stunning Garni Temple and Geghard Monastery. These ancient sites are about an hour from the city and showcase Armenia's rich cultural heritage. Pro tip: join a tour group – it's the easiest way to visit both spots, and you might make some new friends along the way!
If you want to head to Garni Temple and Geghard Monastery, we highly recommend this tour with One Way Tours. The tour guide was one of the best we've come across and there was plenty of free time to explore on our own. If you are looking for something more private, this one is fantastic (and even goes to a few other places)!
The wonderful, the majestic...Garni Temple!
If you'd like to go even further, check out Armenia's ridiculously charming second-largest city, Gyumri. There are also tours that take you there and back to Yerevan in a day, although we recommend at least a few days there.

TL;DR: Plan Your Yerevan Trip (Logistics)
Best Time to Visit Yerevan
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are perfect for exploring Yerevan. You'll catch pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists. Summer can get pretty toasty, while winters are chilly but festive. Fortunately, Yerevan is a very sunny city, so you shouldn't have to worry too much about rainfall screwing up your travel plans.
Do I Need a Visa for Armenia?
Many travelers can enter Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days. EU, US, and UK passport holders, you're in luck! Just check your passport has six months' validity remaining.
For other passport holders, take a look at iVisa for specifics.
How to Get to Yerevan
- Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) is your gateway to Yerevan. Direct flights connect from major European cities. Pro tip: book airport transfers in advance through your hotel or a service like 12Go.
- A lot of travelers come to Yerevan from Tbilisi or other parts of Georgia. We took a van (albeit the opposite direction from Yerevan to Tbilisi), and the van was comfortable and everything went smoothly. Book it on 12Go.
- Some other travelers opt for the overnight train from Tbilisi to Yerevan. For us, the idea of a night train always is better than the actual affair 🤣.
Internet and Data in Yerevan
We generally are big advocates for eSIMs for Airalo, but in all honesty, Armenia was the one country where we faced difficulties with this service (it admittedly didn't work the majority of the time).
Instead, grab a local SIM card or eSIM from a shop - carriers like Beeline and UCom offer affordable tourist packages.
Also, most cafés and restaurants offer free Wi-Fi, so staying connected is a breeze.
Getting Around Yerevan
The metro is cheap and efficient, but we rode it only once in the entire time we were there for the experience, as it seems to connect more outlying suburbs with the city center.
Therefore, taxis are your best friend here for longer distances. Use GG Taxi or Yandex apps - they're reliable and won't break the bank.
Most of the time though, we walked. Walking is perfect for central Yerevan; the city center is surprisingly compact!
Money Matters
Armenian dram is king here, and while cards are widely accepted, keep some cash handy for taxis and local markets. ATMs are plentiful in the city center.
Tipping? 10% is standard at restaurants.
Other Things
- Download offline maps before arriving in case you run into any connectivity issues
- Save key phrases in Armenian - locals appreciate the effort! Trust me, a simple thank you or "շնորհակալություն" (okay it is not that simple of a word - but don't worry, you can just say "merci" like the French do 🤣) goes a long way 🙏.
Come on Mother of Armenia, make Yerevan more gay!
