We spent a few weeks in Yerevan, and while we found that many local gay men were in closet and PDA was nonexistent (between straight people as well), we found that there was an emerging underground culture, much like that of Tbilisi's in neighboring Georgia.

While rainbow flags may not flutter openly in the breeze, Yerevan's LGBTQ+ scene thrives through intimate gatherings, progressive venues, and a tight-knit community that balances visibility with discretion. And although the city and country may not top the World's Most LGBTQ+ friendly lists, there are countless other reasons why you should add Yerevan to your bucket list.

Alright, so Armenia isn't exactly topping the Equality Index charts at 27 out of 100 (although it is one point higher than neighboring Azerbaijan 🙃).

Despite the grim numbers, walking through Yerevan's bustling streets, you'll find the city remarkably safe, especially compared to other capitals in Western Europe. The younger generation here is increasingly open-minded, and you'll discover pockets of progressive culture thriving alongside ancient traditions.

They host some of the city's most vibrant queer parties (and some karaoke, of course) – just don't expect the same kind of open advertising you might see in Western cities. EJE is another favorite spot where you'll find a mixed crowd of locals and travelers vibing together. While not exclusively LGBTQ+, it's known for its welcoming atmosphere and occasional queer events. Pro-tip: weekends are busiest, but mid-week gatherings often feel more intimate and local.

We also loved hanging out at the cafés in Art Kvartal and the ruin bars, such as 13:20.am, which were more hipster than anything, but definitely had some queer people hanging out around them.

If you are a beer fan, make sure to try the famed Yerevan-brewed Dargett Beer. Alternatively, if you are wine fan, Armenia is well-known for its ancient practice of wine-making, so head to a wine bar.

For food lovers, head to Saryan Street, where wine bars and trendy restaurants line the sidewalks. Try traditional dolma (and lamajo) at Tavern Yerevan – the grape leaves are stuffed with the most incredible spiced rice. For booze lovers, head to the Ararat Brandy Company for a quirky brandy tour complete with brandy tasting.

For the perfect (half) day trip, hop over to the stunning Garni Temple and Geghard Monastery. These ancient sites are about an hour from the city and showcase Armenia's rich cultural heritage. Pro tip: join a tour group – it's the easiest way to visit both spots, and you might make some new friends along the way!

Best Time to Visit Yerevan

Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are perfect for exploring Yerevan. You'll catch pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists. Summer can get pretty toasty, while winters are chilly but festive. Fortunately, Yerevan is a very sunny city, so you shouldn't have to worry too much about rainfall screwing up your travel plans.

Do I Need a Visa for Armenia?

Many travelers can enter Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days. EU, US, and UK passport holders, you're in luck! Just check your passport has six months' validity remaining.

How to Get to Yerevan

• Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) is your gateway to Yerevan. Direct flights connect from major European cities. Pro tip: book airport transfers in advance through your hotel or a service like 12Go.
• A lot of travelers come to Yerevan from Tbilisi or other parts of Georgia. We took a van (albeit the opposite direction from Yerevan to Tbilisi), and the van was comfortable and everything went smoothly. Book it on 12Go.
  • Some other travelers opt for the overnight train from Tbilisi to Yerevan. For us, the idea of a night train always is better than the actual affair 🤣.

Internet and Data in Yerevan

We generally are big advocates for eSIMs for Airalo, but in all honesty, Armenia was the one country where we faced difficulties with this service (it admittedly didn't work the majority of the time).

Instead, grab a local SIM card or eSIM from a shop - carriers like Beeline and UCom offer affordable tourist packages.

Also, most cafés and restaurants offer free Wi-Fi, so staying connected is a breeze.

Getting Around Yerevan

The metro is cheap and efficient, but we rode it only once in the entire time we were there for the experience, as it seems to connect more outlying suburbs with the city center.

Therefore, taxis are your best friend here for longer distances. Use GG Taxi or Yandex apps - they're reliable and won't break the bank.

Most of the time though, we walked. Walking is perfect for central Yerevan; the city center is surprisingly compact!

Money Matters

Armenian dram is king here, and while cards are widely accepted, keep some cash handy for taxis and local markets. ATMs are plentiful in the city center.

Tipping? 10% is standard at restaurants.

• Download offline maps before arriving in case you run into any connectivity issues
• Save key phrases in Armenian - locals appreciate the effort! Trust me, a simple thank you or "շնորհակալություն" (okay it is not that simple of a word - but don't worry, you can just say "merci" like the French do 🤣) goes a long way 🙏.
