This place is one of the strangest and most fascinating cities we’ve visited.

At first glance you’ll see copies of famous landmarks. Big Ben. The Eiffel Tower. Venetian canals. Casinos that feel like Vegas.

But look a little closer and you realize it is something entirely different.

For more than 400 years this small city was governed by Portugal before returning to China in 1999. That history created a culture you won’t find anywhere else. Chinese temples next to Portuguese churches. Egg tarts that came from Lisbon but became a local obsession. Streets where Cantonese and Portuguese influences live side by side. It is also fascinating how different it has developed in relative isolation from neighboring Zhuhai.

And somehow… it all works.

Is This Europe or China? 🇲🇴

This road shouldn’t exist… but it does.

In this video, we’re crossing from Macau to Hong Kong over the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, the longest sea crossing in the world at 55 km.

It took 9 years to build, cost ¥127 billion (nearly 16 billion euro), and cuts the journey by road from around 4 hours to about 30–45 minutes.

Part bridge.
Part undersea tunnel.
Built on artificial islands in the middle of the Pearl River Delta.

It links Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China, three cities with different legal and economic systems, under one country.

Some see it as an engineering masterpiece.
Others see political symbolism.

Either way, it reshaped the region.

From the outside, you’d never guess what’s inside. But this 1960s building became a whole world on its own. Traders, migrants, and backpackers from over 100 countries. Cheap guesthouses, curry kitchens, money changers, tiny rooms, and endless elevator lines.
Many people say it feels like the last echo of the Kowloon Walled City, a former lawless enclave that existed until the 1990s. It was never fully controlled by the British or China, so it grew into the densest place on Earth. One block. 50,000 people. No real rules. It was later demolished and replaced with a park.
Chungking Mansions still carries that same energy. Dense. Chaotic. Alive.
Our room was small. The wait for the elevator was long. But it was real. And unforgettable.

While I mainly came up with this hashtag because I am running out of footage and wanted to somehow make the few meager Hong Kong clips I had from Summer 2016 into something, I think I am onto something. I just wish I had more to show you of this incredible city, but that just means I am due for another trip.
