We’ve officially started our bike trip around Taiwan, and day one was not what we expected. From biking through humid chaos in Taipei, accidentally merging onto highways, and sweating through every layer of clothing, to finally rolling into Hsinchu after 95 km at 10:34 pm… this was one unforgettable start to our cycling adventure. 🇹🇼🚴‍♂️

This is part of our Taiwan bikepacking series, where we cycle from Taipei to the south and back up to Taipei on the other side, exploring small towns, night markets, and coastal roads along the way. Expect real moments...the highs, the exhaustion, the snacks, and the stories that come with seeing Taiwan on two wheels.

Day 1: Biking Taiwan Was Not What We Expected… 🇹🇼

Day two of biking around Taiwan… and it definitely still is deviating further from what we planned.

After leaving Hsinchu 新竹, we hit brutal heat, unexpected highways, hill-fun, and endless stretches of road that tested our sanity (and our legs). But between the chaos, we also found the magic...misty mountain roads, kind strangers, the unbeatable comfort of Taiwan’s FamilyMarts and 7-Elevens, and one of the most transfixing moons on the night of the moon festival (中秋節)! 

This ride reminded us why we’re doing this in the first place: to see Taiwan slowly, sweat a lot, and laugh even more.

Taichung: The Real Taiwan Experience 🇹🇼

Chiayi, Taiwan  was not really on our radar during our bike trip. At all. We were supposed to be on a train to Alishan sipping hot tea in the clouds. Instead, every train was booked and we accidentally spent the day exploring Chiayi.

We wandered a historic Japanese era prison, got lost inside Hinoki Village, ate the famous Chiayi turkey rice, and discovered that sometimes the best travel days are the ones that did not go to plan.
Chiayi is charming, chaotic, affordable, and criminally underrated. If you are heading to Taiwan, do not skip it.

Returning to the City That Changed My Life (Tainan, Taiwan) 🇹🇼

Get ready to explore Kaohsiung, the city in Taiwan where we would like to move to!

After leaving Tainan, we biked south through the countryside, stopped at Tardi Hill Natural Park, and rolled into the city from the beautiful Lotus Pond.
Kaohsiung instantly felt different: open, creative, and colorful. The Pier-2 Art Center gave our Huan Dao (Taiwan's Route 1) experience a completely new vibe...modern, relaxed, and full of energy.
The next morning, we hiked Shoushan, also known as Monkey Mountain or Rock Mountain. From there, the city stretched beneath us, and we knew this was our last stop before heading deep south.
By minute 20, we’re ready to leave the big cities behind, taking a train to Fangliao, gateway to the wild beauty of southern Taiwan. Next stop: Kenting National Park.

After leaving Kaohsiung, we jumped on a train to Fangliao, a quiet fishing village on Taiwan’s southern coast. From there, we biked all the way down to the very edge of the island — into the tropical landscapes of Kenting National Park.
Life here felt completely different from the big cities: slower, warmer, and full of seaside charm. We saw what many people call the most beautiful beach in Taiwan, the same spot where parts of Life of Pi were filmed. We explored Hengchun, a historic town still surrounded by its old city walls and four original gates. We ate sushi at the pier where boats leave for Orchid Island and soaked in that chill, Hawaiian-style vibe that makes southern Taiwan feel like its own world.
We honestly wish we stayed longer!🏝️

Taiwan’s Best Kept Secret Beach? Our Journey to the Tropical South 🇹🇼 (The Kenting National Park)

Cycling out of Taitung and heading north toward Hualien, we hit what became the toughest part of our bike trip around Taiwan. This stretch along the East Rift Valley was the moment where “no pain, no gain” finally made sense. We were soaked like wet dogs, battling endless uphill roads, strong winds, flat tires, a broken chain, and surprise rainstorms.

But this difficult ride also gave us some of the most beautiful views in Taiwan’s East Coast, from the golden rice fields of Guanshan, to the tea plantations of Luye Highlands, and the famous landscapes of Chishang. Every challenge...every climb, every raindrop...made the scenery feel even more rewarding.

We rode from Yuli toward Hualien, tackling steep mountain roads, long tunnels, and powerful winds as we crossed from Taiwan’s interior back to the East Coast. Along the way, we followed the dramatic coastline, passed the Tropic of Cancer, and stopped in small towns like Fengbin and near Shitiping, where the weather forced us to slow down and adjust our plans.
Strong winds, rain, and rough sea conditions reminded us how unpredictable cycling in Taiwan can be, especially on the east coast. Flexibility became just as important as endurance during these final stretches. Despite the challenges, we pushed through our last kilometers and rolled into Hualien, marking the end of our long-distance bike journey around the island.
Over the course of less than three weeks, we biked ??? km around Taiwan, covering mountains, coastal roads, cities, and rural villages. It wasn’t easy, but it became one of the most rewarding travel experiences we’ve ever had.

1) local train from taipei main station → ruifang station
2) transfer to bus to get to jiufen old street
(you can take the direct bus from taipei 1062 or 965, but the line was insane. train + bus was faster and way less chaotic.)
things to do in jiufen
- try classic street food (fabio started with stinky tofu… brave.)
- bento lunch with mountain + ocean views
- explore tiny tea houses and write postcards
- stay until the lanterns light up at night

It’s said Taichung’s Chunshuitang (https://www.chunshuitang.com.tw/en/) is the birthplace of bubble tea….thanks to a happy accident back in 1986 involving iced tea and tapioca balls. but here’s the twist: a rival shop in Tainan also says they invented it, and the feud even went to court.

in 2019, the judges said: no one owns bubble tea…it belongs to everyone 💗

Our Wild Day At Taipei Pride 2025 🇹🇼

Biking around Taiwan looked so dreamy online… so naturally we thought, “How hard could it be?”

Short answer: much harder than we expected — but absolutely worth every sweaty, chaotic, beautiful second.

After a few humbling days on the road, here are the things we really wish we knew before starting:

1. The heat is real.
Taiwan’s humidity is on another level. You’re basically sweating 24/7. Sunscreen is essential, water (or Pocari Sweat) is your new best friend, and riding early morning or near sunset makes a huge difference. Luckily, convenience stores are literally everywhere.

2. Don’t sleep on the trains.
A lot of Taiwan’s trains let you bring your bike onboard, and honestly… lifesaver. Whether you’re overheated, facing a big climb, or just want to chill and enjoy the scenery, hopping on a train is the smartest “shortcut” you can take.

3. It’s not all scenic bike paths.
Some sections are peaceful and gorgeous… others put you right next to trucks flying by at full speed. Adventure comes with risks — but that’s part of the fun. Just make sure your travel insurance actually covers you while you’re doing it.
