How to spend the perfect GAY day in Zipolite?

We came to Zipolite in Oaxaca, Mexico for a few days and ended up staying nearly a month 🫣. It just has this enchanting effect on you. Anyone we’ve met who has been there was already planning their next trip back and some had been there well over a dozen times.

So a gay day in Zipolite would kinda go like this (honestly even slower, but we tried to pack as much as we could in there to show you your options):

- Morning: Run on the beach (bathing… nude of course afterwards), maybe going to a local cafe for some breakfast
- Afternoon: The pool parties start (especially on Friday, Saturday, Sunday) at Casa Nudista or @menzipolite
- Sunset: The daily migration to Playa del Amor for sunset activities 👀
- Evening: A lil bar hopping perhaps. Our faves are @fetichezipolite and Chizme and @sebastianzipolite has nice sets too!

The Perfect Gay Day in Zipolite, Mexico 🇲🇽

This is not Chichén Itzá.
This is not Teotihuacan.

When you’re wandering the colorful streets of Oaxaca City, you wouldn’t expect an ancient capital to be sitting right above you…but 15–20 minutes up a winding hill and suddenly you’re in Monte Albán.

Built by the Zapotecs around 500 BCE, this was once home to ~20,000 people and carved straight into the top of a mountain…flattened entirely by hand. It predates both the Aztecs and even the height of the Mayans, yet somehow flies under the radar.

And standing there, with nothing but wind and stone around you (and far less crowds)…it kind of makes you wonder how this isn’t the place everyone talks about.

Tips: We just grabbed a taxi there and back (super easy, ~200–300 pesos each way). Plenty of tours too if you want more context. Go early if you want to escape crowds.

Monte Albán: The Ancient Zapotec Ruins Hidden Above Oaxaca City

Mercado de Juárez is pureeee Oaxaca!

We came here first on a tour of the city and then ended up sticking around for the food.

Here’s what we tried:

🦗 Chapulines (grasshoppers).... If you know us by now, you know we love bugs. Here’s the cool part: they’re packed with protein (about 60-70% by dry weight), rich in iron, calcium, and amino acids. Studies show insects like chapulines have higher bioavailability of minerals than beef. Sustainable, nutritious, and surprisingly delicious. Oaxacans have been eating them for centuries…. and they’re everywhere. We even found them inside our chile relleno the same night 🫣

☕ Tejate…. a pre-Hispanic drink made from corn and cacao. Kinda dry, not sweet and totally unique texture.

🥖 Piedrazo… hardened bread soaked in fruit vinegar with pickled veggies and cheese. Sour, salty, and weirdly addictive. It’s not for everyone.

🍰 Local Marquesita style pastry (gaznates)…. fried, golden cylinder with a sweet creamy filling inside. Ryan said it was too sweet. I said more for me.

There is no possible way you can walk down the streets of Oaxaca city and feel melancholy. The different colors on every building give off a positive energy that so few cities around the world can come even close to replicating.

Home/business owners in the center of Oaxaca actually have a palette they can choose from in order to preserve the aesthetic, and if you don’t pick from the palette, you could get an ordinance ;)

Today, its quiet cobblestone streets have become a canvas for local and Indigenous artists. The murals here are far more than just decoration…. they tell the deep, resilient stories of Oaxaca’s cultural heritage, folklore, and cherished traditions like Día de los Muertos.
