Get your mind out of the gutter… we are talking about hiking.

This is the Strada delle 52 Gallerie on Mount Pasubio in Fabio’s home-region of Veneto, Italy. 🇮🇹

It was built in just 9 months during WWI when Italian soldiers carved this 6.5km mule track directly into sheer rock faces. The goal was to create a secret supply route hidden from enemy artillery fire.

Over 2 kilometers of the trail run completely underground through 52 numbered tunnels….. including incredible helical spirals engineered to climb the mountain from the inside out.

Today, it’s one of Europe’s most breathtaking, atmospheric hikes (and a very difficult, long one at that too)

You Won’t Believe What’s Inside This Italian Theater 😱

We made it our mission this day to find the chiller parts of Venice and that led us on a sponteneous island hopping quest.

- It started with Murano, the glass making island. We were actually staying at a converted glass making factory during this trip, which was totally unique.
- Next up was Sant’Erasmo. This is Venice’s agricultural island. You’ll find here artichoke fields, vineyards, and two restaurants… one being this airstream that sells burgers and spritzes 🩷🩷 (Experientia)
- The next stop is actually on Italy’s mainland, Punta Sabbioni…. But who knew you could get white sand beaches so close to Venice?!
- Finally, we had to hit up Burano on the way back. The lovely thing is that as the sun goes down, many have left the island, so lots of golden hour photo shoot ops!

You can get a 24-hour or 72-hour vaporetto pass to bring down the cost of things…. A LOT. We had a 72 hour one as we were in Venice multiple days, but all of this was possible in one day (albeit slightly rushed). So if you are coming to Venice and want to get off of the Centro Storico island, consider a little island hopping adventure.

Surrounded by stunning peaks, we found unexpected snow for skiing in late March, including the panoramic slopes of Mount Tognola at 2,200 meters.

Should I Still Visit Venice in 2024? | Veneto Region Guide 🇮🇹

How to escape 99% of the crowds in Venice without leaving the lagoon:

1. Stay overnight in Murano Most travelers only visit Murano on a quick day trip. Stay overnight…. gor example, in a repurposed 13th-century glass factory…. and you will have the island’s canals and streets practically to yourself once the daytime crowds depart.

2. Visit San Michele Island San Michele is a peaceful cemetery island located in the lagoon. It offers a quiet, reflective atmosphere where you are almost guaranteed to be among the only visitors wandering the grounds.

3. Experience the Venice Biennale for free You don’t always need a ticket to experience Biennale artwork on the main island. Several historic, less-frequented churches host official national pavilions at zero cost (such as the installation from Kyrgyzstan).

4. Explore Fondamenta Nove & nearby canal paths Head toward the northern side of the main island in the Fondamenta Nove area. Here you can visit a converted historical theater that now serves as a unique local supermarket, then catch the sunset along canal paths lined with locals enjoying a casual aperitivo.

How to Find Peace in Venice: A Guide to the Hidden Lagoon

If you want the ambience of Venice, but without the crazy crowds, and something very local…

📍Chioggia

…is the place for you.

How to get there:
- You can take the 80E bus from Venice to Chioggia (1 hour)
- There is also a vaporetto/bus combo from Lido. It’ll take longer than the bus above, but it is the more scenic route.

What to do in Chioggia:
- Wander Chioggia island - it feels like Venice, but much more local. There are fabulous spots for aperitivo and seafood and they are going to cost a lot less than Venice. It is a bit like Venice if it had cars, but there are lots of pedestrianized spots. Also, lots of little corners to get lost in :)
- Sottomarina - there are also some beautiful beaches here. Most of them are organized beaches, but you can also just park your towel in front of them.
